Architectural Drawing + Representation II

In ADR 1, your work focused on drawing and modeling in the context of a selected object: a building. Your work was descriptive, perhaps more prescriptive, and largely geometry based (what something “looks like”). ADR 2 will focus on drawing and modeling as data-based processes (the underlying structure of decisions that inform a drawing or model). You will have the opportunity to intersect spatial and geometric representation with information, including temporal, environmental, social, material, historical, and sequential data. Computational processes can help us study, test, and propose design conditions as systems, rather than as fixed objects or outcomes. Here your work will be procedural, serial, and entangled. You will work with both graphical and non-graphical data; geometry and parameters; algorithms inside and outside of the computer.

Your work, a semester-long independent project, asks you to develop a process for conducting research and making rule-based drawings and helping to generate ideas, systems, and relationships. You may consider this a series of rigorous experiments that constitute a body of work, or you may take this to be a mini-thesis on representation. It can relate to your studio research, but should not replicate work already done in studio.

Tutorials: The class will also serve as an introduction and inquiry into computation, simulations, and algorithmic thinking. Unlike ADRI, these tutorials are to be considered parallel workflows rather than workflows tooled immediately into the assignments. They are there to help you cultivate a sensibility for process and computational thinking in parallel in relation to your own creative research.
