Urban Data: Parking in the Ala Moana Neighborhood and its Impact on Mobility

Aug 19, 2019 – Aug 30, 2019
Honolulu, Hawaii
Research Question

Studies have demonstrated the detrimental effects that carbon monoxide emissions from motor vehicles have on air quality. On- and off-street parking have largely been a responsive municipal service. With the emergence of new technology and the immediacy of the climate change horizon, decisions at the local level can help increase citizens’ awareness of alternative options as well as set the criteria for forward-thinking parking regulations and mobility systems change. Can new technologies automate the collection of parking spaces in urban environments and which methods are suitable for which tasks?

Methodology

Data Collection

  • Obtain and use any existing information
  • Inventory of parking spaces(off and on street)
  • Classification of parking spots (public/private)
  • Identify payment/revenue for parking
  • Possibly usage/volume/operations

Make Data Available

  • Make a spatial data set (GIS-based)
  • Join attribute data of parking

Automation

  • Sensors
  • Drones
  • Satellite imagery
  • Computer Vision Algorithms

Validation

  • Compare results from the machine learning models with ground truth data

Output and Findings

A short report of methods and outcomes is available here.
