The Battle for Streets: Reclaiming Our Right of Way

Jun 13, 2022 – Jul 1, 2022
Across New York City
Research Question
As the global population urbanizes at unprecedented rates, the need is greater than ever before to rethink the role of city streets, re-envision the design of streets and curbs, and solidify the foundation for sustainable mobility options that enable economic, social, and environmental well-being of city dwellers around the world.
Methodology and Process

This workshop will have a combination of lectures, guest speaker sessions, and site visit to critical nodes in the New York street network to discuss, critique, and analyze the role and evolution of streets. The workshop will rely heavily on the research and findings of the National Association of City Transportation Officials, and its global arm, the Global Designing Cities Initiative, and their internationally acclaimed Global Street Design Guide.

Site visits would entail taking measurements of street segments, exploring the streets from the average height of a five year old, counting users at busy intersections, and synthesizing findings at the end of the workshop.

Output and Findings
Students will gain an understanding of the forces fighting over limited curb and street spaces, the economic value of streets and sidewalks, and the place of streets in public life. Students will also get a chance to apply principles covered in this workshop on a street segment from their hometown or current city of residence to train themselves on detecting the flaws in city street design.
