Multigenerational Housing for New York City

May 3, 2021 – May 17, 2021
Across New York City
Research Question
This workshop addresses the subject of designing collective multigenerational housing in New York City. How does health affect housing? How do multigenerational households function today? How is the health of dwellers of different ages impacted by the design of housing? What new observations can be made? How can accessibility and aging in place perform? What are the policies in place? What housing can be designed?
Methodology
To explore these questions through design, the students will be led by Professor Hilary Sample and with the New York City Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) team. Over the course of the workshop, the students’ design proposals will be developed and reviewed by HPD sub-committees including the Building and Land Development Services, the Office of Policy and Strategy, Strategic Planning, and Special Needs Housing / Senior Housing programs.
Output and Findings
Students will work through traditional architectural drawings, utilize contemporary methods of data collection, and develop renderings that will be assembled into a booklet and image selection for potential publication.
