Museum with Only Galleries

As a response to the counter brief (a museum with only galleries), we designed a museum with homogenous proto-galleries occupied by art that support the complexity of its context. We proposed a prototype in which the back-of-house wraps the front-of-house. Through this pairing, a greater variety of scales and connections are supported. The wrapping acts as an armature for art; its spatial quality contrasts with the neatness of the front-of-house. The binary spatial experience provides a more dynamic and flexible alternative for institutions and curators. The pairing introduces a third spatial type: the crack. The crack brings light to the wrapped layer both in plan and section. It also brings forth a gallery type that is capable of interacting with the city.
