The Returning Earth

“This project proposes a modular precast soil system that transforms urban infrastructure waste into high-performance architectural solutions. Located in the extremely hot climate of Puducherry, India, the ”“Soil Outpost”“ serves as both a factory and an educational institute, utilizing 35 million cubic meters of surplus soil from Mumbai’s transit excavations.

By mixing local soil with agricultural waste like rice husk and a natural seaweed-based bio-adhesive, the project introduces a lightweight, carbon-negative panel system that sequesters 8 tons of CO2e. These panels are integrated into a reusable aluminum frame that doubles as a casting mold, ensuring rapid assembly and easy deconstruction. Designed for a 50-year lifecycle to match India’s projected population peak, the building follows a ”“cradle-to-grave”“ philosophy, where the architecture naturally returns to the earth, transitioning from a carbon sink today to a biological nutrient for the future.”
