Project by Avalon Rossi Tipton
The project proposes a Textile Museum and Learning Center for the former U.S. Embassy in Dublin, intended to foster a growing fashion industry within the city. The original historic architecture serves as a visual framework for the addition which is situated along the backside of the site. The added structure rises to a maximum height of four stories and houses two levels of museum space as well as two levels for a design-focused Trade School. The upper two levels of the existing building are utilized as much needed residential units for the students. The design of the addition draws upon references to Johansen’s other works such as the Goddard Library, and is careful to not overwhelm the existing architecture through cascading levels and ample outdoor space. The proposed mix of relevant and suitable program ensures an economically viable proposal which aims to preserve Johansen’s significant architectural contribution.
