Star Pull

Project by Claire Galla

A re-envisioning of Nancy Holt’s piece Star Crossed, a site based earth work intending to capture a moment in 1974 when geographic north and magnetic north aligned, where a compass would show no pull towards magnetic declination. Holt wanted to bring the sky down to the earth. In this image series, I attempt to bring the viewer into the planetary space to showcase a dramatic suspension of Holt’s concrete tubes as they float relative to how the earth’s magnetic field lines guide charged particles from the sun towards the magnetic poles, which create the Northern and Southern lights.
