Mahum Erkin

Mahum Erkin is a multiethnic architectural designer and academic whose work is grounded in cultural resistance and decoloniality. Her research focuses on Central Asian territories and traditions, drawing on her Uzbek and Turkic heritage to examine how indigenous knowledge and cultural memory can be preserved through architecture and design. She expands this inquiry as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

As the founder of Studio MM, Mahum leads a women-run creative studio designing brands and spaces. The studio operates globally to build cross-cultural narratives for clients across North America, Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East.

Mahum trained as an architect at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan, where her thesis exploring the intersection of film and architecture received the Mehdi Ali Mirza Award from the Institute of Architects Pakistan. She was awarded the Erasmus+ scholarship and grant to study at Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey, after which she earned a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia GSAPP. Her work was featured at an exhibition at the Buenos Aires Architecture Biennial in 2026.
