Maksym Rokmaniko

Maksym Rokmaniko (b. 1991, Khmelnytsky, Ukraine) is an architect, researcher, and educator. He is the founding director of the Center for Spatial Technologies (CST), a transdisciplinary research collective working at the intersection of architectural, investigative, anthropological, and artistic practice. He is a Fellow at Forensic Architecture. Trained as an architect in Kyiv, he studied on a Fulbright at the University of Oregon and worked in Japan and the Netherlands before founding CST.

His work uses spatial modeling as a method of inquiry. The Mariupol Drama Theater Spatial Archive, developed by CST in collaboration with Forensic Architecture, reconstructs the weeks civilians spent sheltering in the building before the Russian airstrike of March 16, 2022. Built from satellite imagery, witness footage, and spatial interviews, it combines 3D models and diagrams to document both the destruction and the self-organized life inside the theater. The research was presented in the film A City Within a Building in Berlin and at Columbia’s Harriman Institute. Other CST projects include a spatial reconstruction of the historical Jewish cemetery at Babyn Yar in Kyiv, built from archival maps and German aerial photographs, and a heritage platform documenting Russian fortifications that are destroying archaeological sites in Crimea. The video installation Church, Chora, Chersonese was shown at JAM Factory in Lviv in The Stammering Circle, curated by Marta Kuzma. Most recently, CST built a 3D archive of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra that places images of wartime damage within a model of the site.

At GSAPP, Maksym leads the Soil Histories Clinic, whose studio “Soil Histories: The Great Meadow” is taught in parallel with Lucia Rebolino’s seminar “Earth Engines.” The studio reads the landscape of the former Kakhovka reservoir as a constructed and managed environment, using 1941 to 1943 German aerial photographs, counter-mapping, and oral histories to build a collective atlas for the debate over the territory’s postwar future. He is based in Los Angeles.
