Uriel Fogué

With a PhD in architecture from the UPM (outstanding doctoral dissertation prize, 2014-15; doctoral dissertation finalist at the X Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, 2016), Uriel Fogué’s research and practice explores the role of architecture to face ecological matters from a cosmopolitical and cosmotechnical approach. In permanent dialogue with other disciplines -such as philosophy, sociology and art- he combines his architectural practice at the renowned and awarded architecture office elii with research (at the Political Fictions Crisis Cabinet, the Institute For Postnatural Studies and the Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives) and teaching (at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, UPM and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL).

Since 2006, he has been co-directing the architecture office elii (with Eva Gil and Carlos Palacios), which took part in the Spanish Pavilions at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale (awarded the 2016 Golden Lion) and at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale. Among other national and international recognitions, elii has two works selected for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies Van Der Rohe Award (2015, 2019). Their work Yojigen Poketto was selected as one of the 20 visionary domestic spaces of the last 100 years in the exhibition ‘Home Stories 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors’, at the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein (2020). Elii won the FAD Award (2020, 2005), and were finalist and shortlisted for the FAD Award (2017, 2018, 2020). They won First Prize from the Madrid College of Architects (2017) and have been recognized on other 5 occasions with the COAM Award (2018, 2016, 2013, 2011, 2006).

Fogué is author of the book The architectures of the end of the world (Puente editors, 2022). And co-author of the books: Super Petites Maisons (EPFL, 2022), Beyond the Limits (CentroCentro, 2020), and What is Home Without a Mother (HIAP – MataderoMadrid, 2015), awarded at the XIII Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo 2015. He was also co-editor of the art and architecture publication UHF (1999-2010), listed in the Archivo de Creadores de Madrid. His article “Technifying Public Space and Publicizing Infrastructures: Exploring New Urban Political Ecologies through the Square of General Vara del Rey”, published in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR, 2013), together with Fernando Domínguez Rubio, was highlighted as one of the most relevant texts in the scientific journal’s last 40 years.

Fogué has lectured and participated in juries and panels at several international institutions, such as HEAD Genève (2023), University of Illinois (2022), University of Warwick (2022), Columbia University (2021), Princeton University (2020), MIT (2018), Goldsmiths University (2018), TU Munich (2017), Torcuato di Tella University (2016, 2009), Arkitektskolen Aarhus (2015), Harvard GSD (2014, 2011), RWTH Aachen University (2012), Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies 4S (2010), University of Manchester (2010), among others.
