Making Studio COVID-19 Update – August 28, 2020

The Making Studio will open this Fall semester in a limited and controlled way. Physical making while physical distancing requires a bit of remodeling how our spaces are accessed and shared. We ask for everyone’s help, participation, and patience to ensure that the shops can reopen and operate safely.

Before attending the shop, GSAPP students need to complete a full new safety orientation. This is true for new students as well as returning students. Once completed, access will be by-appointment-only, with spacing and cleaning regimens on top of daily use. Laser cutting and 3D printing services will remain available, with modified rules to limit in-person contact. Refer to those respective pages for details.

1. The shops are open by appointment only. We ask that students please don’t come to the 1st floor of Schermerhorn Extension without an appointment: There are no ‘drop-ins’.

  • During the fall 2020 semester, the Making Studio shops are open from 10am–8pm, Mon-Fri.
  • Students may sign up for hourly booking slots, to a maximum of 8 hours per week.
  • Signups are managed over the web via this Google spreadsheet. Passing new orientations is required first.

2. There is limited storage space for in-progress models in the 24-7 room.

  • This does not include raw materials – papers, hardware, mixes, etc…
  • Tag your work with a colored project tag, or your models will be removed.
  • No food or drink is permitted in the shops.

3. New safety orientations are required of ALL students, new and returning.

  • Orientation is provided in the form of the short online video below. After viewing the orientation video, please take the online Rascal Training Quiz and submit a response to the online Shop Orientation Contract to confirm your acknowledgement of COVID-19 Shop Guidelines for the Fall 2020 semester. Refer to the information listed below Required Training at the bottom of the page to learn how to access the training quiz on the Rascal website.
  • After passing the new orientation, students will be provided safety goggles that are yours to keep.
  • Existing CNC/laser certifications will stand.

4. The shops are organized around distancing rules and disinfection routines, and your use of tables, tools, and space revolve around these rules.

  • Shop room occupancies are strictly capped at physical distancing guidelines, at 8.
  • There is be no shared PPE. Safety glasses will be given to you to keep and bring back, and single-use disposable hair and ear protection is available in the shop.
  • As in all GSAPP spaces, cloth masks are required at all times.
  • Shared hand tools will receive disinfection around points of pick-up and drop-off. N95 masks are not available.

The shop provides material, technical, and design support for all modeling, building, and making endeavors among students at GSAPP.

The space contains an inventory of both digital and manual fabrication equipment—from hand tools to power tools to large-format CNC machines. Our mission is to provide a continuum of support for physical experimentation and production, from heavy duty sheet goods to precision work on fine models.

Students of GSAPP have access to the shop after the completion of a University-level online training quiz, a virtual orientation to policy and safety procedures, and agreement to the Shop Orientation Contract.
