Fight, Squat, Resist

The installation addresses squatting as an alternative for communal living, in response to the housing problem in Brazil.
Alongside the stories of leaders of the National Struggle for Housing Movement, fighting for the right to the city, the installation presents the objectives, strategies, victories and urban visions of the movement. In addition, the installation illustrates the daily life of the residents of the Manuel Congo Squat in Rio’s city center. This squat is regarded as an example of participatory architectural design, in which residents and architects collaborate to realise a community housing project with public facilities. The installation shows that the struggle for affordable housing and access to the city is ever present.
Fight, Squat, Resist: Housing Alternatives of Social Movements is Studio-X Rio’s contribution to Columbia GSAPP’s Housing the Majority initiative, investigating the issue of housing and urban inequality on a global scale. The project was previously on view in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
This installation is part of the ongoing collaboration between Studio-X and Het Nieuwe Instituut, that has so far manifested in this presentation, as well as the exhibition Control Syntax Rio, previously on view in Het Nieuwe Instituut and now on at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City until May 20, 2017.

A instalação aborda as ocupações como uma alternativa para a convivência, em resposta ao problema da habitação no Brasil. Ao lado das histórias de líderes do Movimento Nacional de Luta pela Moradia, lutando pelo direito à cidade, a instalação apresenta os objetivos, estratégias, vitórias e visões urbanas do movimento. Além disso, ilustra a vida cotidiana dos residentes da Ocupação Manuel Congo (no Centro da cidade do Rio) considerado como um exemplo de projeto arquitetônico participativo, no qual moradores e arquitetos colaboraram para a realização de um projeto de moradia comunitária com instalações públicas. A instalação mostra ainda que a luta pela habitação a preços acessíveis e pelo acesso à cidade está sempre presente.
A contribuição do Studio-X Rio para a iniciativa Housing the Majority, em que a GSAPP (Universidade de Columbia) vem investigando a questão da habitação e da desigualdade urbana em escala global. O projeto foi exibido no Rio de Janeiro (2016) e atualmente está também exposto na Columbia em Nova York.
Esta instalação faz parte da colaboração contínua entre o Studio-X e o Het Nieuwe Instituut, que até agora se manifestou nesta apresentação, bem como a exposição Control Syntax Rio, anteriormente vista no Het Nieuwe Instituut e agora na at Storefront for Art and Architecture em Nova York até 20 de maio de 2017.
