PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
The reconsideration of the agency of the architect and architecture confronting issues of equity, justice, climate change and uncertainty demands a revisioning of the practice of architecture. This revisioning of the Professional Practice course aims to prepare the next generation of architects to be apt for change; to respond to the myriad of challenges ahead; and to formulate new modes of professional practice. A dialogue around radical practicing is promoted through this course. Lectures will focus on addressing the discipline’s exclusionary dynamics to prompt models that allow architects to reclaim agency over the design processes, ethics, and the condition of labor under which architecture operates.
The class will respond to the demands of today’s professional realm with a comprehensive approach to the risks, responsibilities, and activism required of the architecture profession. In addition to lectures the course will integrate weekly workshops and guests lectures with experts in different fields.
The class will focus on pragmatic goals that will give students practice and labor literacy to prepare them to access the profession once graduated. Using practice formation models (Business Plan) and Request for Proposal (RFP) group exercises, the participants will formulate a practice team, and understand the value proposition an architectural team delivers, as well, as the risks inherent within the building process. The workshop prepares the students to present, prepare a targeted portfolio, and formulate financial plans to form a practice and apply to the RFP.
