Career Services

Career services for MSUP students are coordinated by the Associate Director for Professional Development and Practice, who has over 35 years of experience in the public sector at the NYC Department of City Planning, at a large non-profit planning organization, at a large development company, and private consulting on planning and design projects. We emphasize direct engagement with students on students’ career goals, professional development, and potential employment opportunities. A key service is one-on-one consultations, at least once a semester for each student, to explore what types of work a student is interested in and what potential places of employment a student hopes to connect with.

Students’ involvement with career services should begin at the moment of matriculation, and students career aspirations should also inform the types of courses taken. We are here to help students take advantage of our location in New York City, discover unmatched opportunities for jobs and internships, and interact with the best thinkers and practitioners in the rapidly changing field of planning and beyond.

GSAPP maintains a job board to advertise open full-time, part-time, internship, and fellowship positions. In addition, a weekly updates newsletter distributed by the program advertises openings, upcoming conferences, and other professional development opportunities. Each semester we offer workshops on developing resumes and cover letters, where to find jobs and internships, interviewing, and preparing for the AICP exam. Twice a year we connect students and alumni for informal networking events. To support alums, our office offers one-on-one consultations on resumes, cover letters, and general job search advice up to one year after graduation. Alums enjoy continued access to GSAPP Gateway, where they can explore job opportunities and connect with employers; we also post jobs of all levels to our LinkedIn group.

To see graduate placement data for the past 5 years, visit our career services page employer data tab and filter by program. Hover over the number next to M.S. Urban Planning to see our program’s data only.

Urban Magazine

URBAN is a magazine created, edited, and published by M.S. in Urban Planning students. The publication features writing, interviews, photo essays, and graphic work related to urban planning and city life. While most contributors are in the Urban Planning department, students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit work and have been featured in past issues.
