Upper West Side Community Garden

Student(s)
Faculty
José Aragüez

Located just north of the Upper Westside, the intervention within the block’s void is placed on top of a series of two-to-three story Tudor houses that are flanked by high-rises on each side.

The intervention looks at the differing levels of privacy afforded to those who live in the Tudor homes, and those who do not. The intention was to design a series of gardens that reflect these differences. The first level houses semiprivate growing spaces that are accessible only to the inhabitants of the Tudor homes. By contrast, the level(s) on top are publicly accessible from the street, include a public community garden, a marketplace, and an education center.
