This studio engaged HP and UP students in a study of the Rock Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia, which have stood for more than eight centuries. Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrims travel to the site every year, as well as an increasing number of tourists. Student research focused on planning and preservation strategies for sustainable destination management and urban development that respect the cultural and spiritual significance of this sacred site.
