Interrogating San Juan Hill: A Preservation Lens on Restorative Justice

This studio focused on the San Juan Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, which underwent dramatic transformation as part of the urban renewal program that built Lincoln Center, Fordham University, and Lincoln Towers. In the early part of the twentieth century, San Juan Hill was home to a significant Black community, and later to a Puerto Rican community, both of whom were displaced. Their legacies are underrepresented in the centered narratives of placemaking and preservation in the city. As a form of counternarration, students examined patterns of injustice in the study area – how they emerged historically, repeated over time, and are embedded in the built environment. Using these findings as a basis of potential action students then developed proposals, aimed at experimentally applying the tools of historic preservation to promote restorative justice.
