Pulling The Thread

“This web application explores how digital communication has evolved the way we connect and use language, an idea Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore explored in their 1967 book ”“The Medium is the Massage”“, arguing that the medium itself shapes us as much as the content it carries.

Two users, sitting side by side, exchange messages through simulated delivery methods ranging from WhatsApp and iMessage to USPS Truck and Airplane. Each method estimates a carbon cost for delivery, though the metrics used to quantify digital emissions remain an active area of research.

The simulation places Person A in New York City and Person B in Philadelphia, 95 miles apart. At the end, a receipt printer outputs a record of the conversation to take with you.”
