Robinson mausoleum

Project by Yang Zhi

Robinson is a smaller mausoleum within Woodlawn Cemetery, yet it features elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship. Its exterior facade is carved from granite, featuring two Doric columns (in the style of the Parthenon). At the center of the pediment is an inlaid winged sun disc, a finely detailed relief known as the sun disc or winged disc, drawing inspiration from ancient Egyptian artistic elements. The bronze doors are engraved with floral and torch motifs, symbolizing the eternal flame passed down through generations. The interior is dominated by a massive stone sarcophagus, the central feature of the space. It bears the birth and death dates of the Robinsons, an American couple. Mr. Robinson was a tobacco merchant during his lifetime. Furthermore, at the deepest centre of the tomb, a square stained-glass window is embedded, depicting exquisite angelic figures. However, due to funding constraints, the mausoleum now exhibits numerous areas of damage.
