The place does not exist until it is unfolded. The chosen mode of representation prompts the viewer to perceive the Strand Book Store alternately as a book, a building, and a container or repository of knowledge. It materializes the experience of discovery that visitors encounter when opening a book—engaging with a narrative, a catalogue, or a brochure. The construction of the model deliberately references the craft of bookbinding, employing traditional materials such as book cloth and binder’s board as both structural and symbolic elements. The model incorporates multiple methods of folding and binding, including conventional codex structures, accordion folds, and other bookmaking techniques, allowing the spatial narrative to be revealed through successive acts of opening and transformation.
