Project by Moon Son and Vivian Silva Freitas
“Afterlight Path is an architectural exploration that begins with a single Joseon Dynasty Covered Jar, reinterpreted as the smallest architectural container of memory. The jar embodies a worldview in which life and death exist in continuous cycles, and memory endures beyond disappearance. The project translates this concept into the layered histories of Manhattan, weaving together City Hall Park and surrounding sites where erased communities, burial grounds, and acts of resistance once existed. Rather than constructing a singular monument, Afterlight Path unfolds as a continuous sequence of movement, inviting visitors to walk, pause, descend, and pass through space as a form of remembrance. Through light, subterranean chambers, and subtle architectural gestures, the project reveals obscured truths and transforms the city into an ongoing landscape of mourning, reflection, and collective memory.”
