Sovereignty of Voices

The UNHQ North Lawn could offer stages and seats to bring the public back to the discussion table. Our design of theaters is parallel to the delegates’ chambers, but the stages are for the people. It connects the UN with the public. The UNHQ is closed due to security concerns. We’ve seen the global public’s power. Their voices have influenced law and history. The UN seeks peace, equality, and prosperity for all. The public can help the UN with this.

The proposal has three layers: interior, sub-roof landscape, and upper roof. The ground level has four different-sized,-shaped theaters. Its roof forms a public landscape, a new ground-level silhouette beneath the upper roof. Circulation is centered on a round podium on the General Assembly axis. It connects to various theaters, allowing the public to choose their role as speaker or listener.

The UN’s renovated north lawn has multiple uses. The global network of theaters can serve as a frontline of mass protest. Most of the time, it serves as an urban leisure space to gather and engage with the UN. Sovereignty of Voices is a congress that belongs to the people; working with the UN to create change.
