Mitchell Adelstein has been an adjunct faculty member with Columbia GSAPP for over 20 years. Over 1,000 GSAPP students have taken his Dealmaking class on opportunistic real estate investment and private equity syndication. In 1998, he founded Capstone Realty Group to acquire and redevelop opportunistic and value-add commercial office, retail, and mixed-use properties.
In the past two decades, Capstone has successfully acquired over $550M in defaulted mortgages and distressed and value-add office, retail, and mixed-use projects in the Northeast and Southeast Florida. Professor Adelstein has overseen the renovation and development of over 4.5M square feet while being the managing partner of Capstone’s design and construction, project finance, and property management. Mitchell is also an investor in Sixty Hotels, formerly Thompson Hotels, where he is an advisor to the company on hotel project finance.
In the late 1990’s, Professor Adelstein was a Wall Street investment banker where he arranged over $2 billion in equity and debt for hotel and office projects in the US, Canada, and Latin America. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Mitchell worked at Ernst & Young as a certified MAI appraiser advising large national developers, pension funds, insurance companies, and banks on complex valuation, bankruptcy & restructuring, and corporate finance matters.
Mitchell is an avid equestrian and plays polo at the International Polo Club and Mashomack Polo Club. His professional affiliations include: MAI-Appraisal Institute, CRE-Real Estate Counselors, Urban Land Institute, Pension Real Estate Association, and National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries. He graduated from NYU (MS, Real Estate Investment) and Syracuse University (BA, School of Management).
