Ryan Devlin

Ryan Thomas Devlin is an urbanist whose research focuses primarily on urban informality as it occurs in immigrant communities in the global North. Specific projects include work on street vending in New York City, as well as work on informal apartments in New York’s outer boroughs, and streetscape interventions (both formal and informal) made in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also interested in how informal and ephemeral urban practices figure into notions of heritage and preservation in the built environment and is involved in an ongoing project comparing the ways notions of heritage inform ideas about street vending and informality in New York and Rome.

Ryan’s work on informality spans the local and global. He has collaborated with local nonprofits and international NGOs such as the Street Vendor Project and WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment Globalizing and Organizing), advocating for the rights of informal workers around the globe.

Ryan is a graduate of GSAPP’s Urban Planning Masters Program. He holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to teaching at GSAPP, Ryan teaches in the Historic Preservation Program at the Pratt Institute and the Urban Studies program at Queens College (CUNY).
