Sustainable Urban Planning and Design

This course introduces advanced techniques of sustainable planning and design with an emphasis on regulations that support green building practices and promote sustainable development patterns. Attention is given to the history, development and incidence of a variety of progressive planning and design techniques. Subjects covered will range from bioclimatic architecture and urban design to advanced regulatory techniques aimed at managing growth, promoting inclusion and affordability, and improving livability. Other topics include green infrastructure (low-impact design) and sustainable zoning techniques (e.g. solar access and wind apparatus placement), and good urban form (e.g. Transit-Oriented Development, Design Guidelines and Form-Based Codes). Several innovative community case studies will also be discussed, including Solar City (Linz, Austria), Bo01 (Mälmo, SE), Hammarby Sjöstad (Stockholm, SE), and Civano (Arizona). Of interest to the student is a focus on the practical questions of what works, what doesn’t, and why?
