The In-Between School
The In-Between School was designed around the central concept of creating a unique circulatory experience on each level, while simultaneously integrating formal and informal moments of play, learning, and gathering. Formalistically, amorphous volumes containing various programmatic elements intersect with and are suspended between the floor slabs, thus creating dynamic moments that disrupt the uniformity of those slabs. Light is introduced to the interior of all floors through a series of structural light wells that punch through the slabs on the south, as well as a large atrium on the north side. The voids created by the atrium and light wells encourage communication between students of all ages both visually and physically, and on all levels of the school. Geared towards the curious, inquisitive, and explorative, this project seeks to evoke a continuity between the moments of play and learning rather than separating the two.
