Safe Space Playscape

Safe Space Playscape imagines play as a community endeavor. A response against surveillance and policing in NYC schools, this proposal seeks to create a safe space for children and teens of all ages to create a diverse, cross-generational learning experience. By breaking the H-block of the existing site, pedestrian traffic can flow through the space, creating a playscape in the school itself. The existing wings of the original building are kept, and ramps are woven between them. This area houses playgrounds and a new education space that allows for more individualized learning and play with high school students after hours. On top, playgrounds are interspersed, with the ramps acting as a giant hill for kids to run up and down. The hill culminates in a playground and garden on the rooftop.
