Scribbly Drizzle Learning Center

Scribbly Drizzle Learning Center is a public school reconfiguration with 15,000 square feet program addition. The new proposal includes a learning center for children with special needs and a dormitory for homeless students at Lower East Side, New York. The design arrives at its physical form through serendipitous ink play, siting consideration and structural specification. A play device generated serendipitous ink prints by chance and created architecture through accidents, which are documented through analog.

The organic ink prints bring opportunities for the programs by allowing programs to create courtyard conditions naturally through overlapping. The prints’ overlaps become circulation space, create mezzanine levels and induce more interaction among the programs. Height differences of different program requirements create three-dimensional formal complexity into a simple design.

Programs are housed within the ink prints. Their allocation on site is specific to the context and tailored for their particular requirements. The program boundary within follows the flow of the ink prints to take advantage of the organic shapes.
