Vertical Sidewalk: Public Space Along Broadway

This project looks to intersect the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation with the Department of Consumer & Worker Protection by proposing a network of tree nurseries and retail incubators for small, minority, and women-owned businesses. The site strategy is a series of parking sites overseen by the DCWP, and each structure is a vertical extrusion of the sidewalk, becoming an easily accessible extension of the pedestrian streetscape to activate small retail spaces along the route. The project plays with the upper and under side of the sidewalk, as well as a push-and-pull of the public and private, to support each function and shape space.
