In an alternative present, the Korea Heritage Service Bureau of Buried Heritage has established the northeastern corner of Euljiro, District 4, as a zone of Significant National Heritage (SNH) to articulate the material landscape of the area across all time periods. Using recomposed elements of the soon-to-be-demolished Sewoon Sangga complex and its surrounding neighborhood, distinct operations respond to specific site features and the material makeup of the found elements. The SNH, separate from the adjacent Jongmyo Shrine, chooses to embrace the entirety of the material, historical, and cultural aspects of the site. Not a frozen period of time. Radios, calculators, and illegal firearms are given the same importance as the pots, jewelry, and foundations of the Joseon dynasty. Maintaining the material culture but providing new futures our project proposes new ways of imagining heritage and rejects the fallacy of Tabula Rasa.
