Canopy as Social Infrastructure: A Community Resiliency Center at Coney Island

Michael Kan, Julia Qian

This project proposes a next-generation Community Resiliency Center for Coney Island, organized beneath a modular roof system that operates as an urban-scale shading device. The expansive overhanging roof system is designed to provide shade during heat waves, allowing the space to also function as a cooling center for the local community.

The design envisions a “shaded commons”, a open civic field that supports daily community life while transforming into an emergency accommodation that can house up to 1000 residents during times of crisis. The elevated canopy mitigates urban heat island effect and creates habitable outdoor space, while water collection, and passive cooling enhance long-term resilience.
