Living in the Vessel is an artists’ summer residency which uses explorations of basic framing principles to create living conditions informed by Long Island’s light conditions and maritime history. The project is a response to the D'Amico Arte Barge: a creative space with studios for art instructors and others to learn. The surrounding areas, however, have become to unnafordable for visitors to stay over the summer. By using ¾" plywood sandwiched between simple 2x framing members, the structure varies in shape throughout its length. The result is a skylight aperture through the top, and an outter skin construction similar to boat planking on its double-curved openings. The project should not be thought of as a boat, but as an object traveled through to reach the ocean on its other end.
