EXPAND/RETRACT reimagines the abandoned WSL Amagansett radio station as dynamic collective housing for art teachers invited to teach at the D’Amico Art Barge each summer. The existing brick walls and steel frame are retained as a protective shell, preserving the site’s industrial memory while shielding the new intervention from the harsh Hamptons winter. Within this envelope, a rail-mounted living module slides outward during summer, transforming the compact structure into expanded communal housing. In winter, the module retracts back inside, reducing weather exposure and increasing the building’s lifespan. Material reuse is central to the proposal. Revamped roof structures use reclaimed timber salvaged from the dismantled Smith Meal factory located a mile and a half away, while the sliding system uses disused LIRR rail tracks that once served the factory. Through motion, adaptation, and reuse, this project proposes a resilient model of seasonal and affordable living.
