Reed Perimeter

Reed Perimeter investigates how reed can be used in small dwelling units designed around the scale of a typical garage. The project explores three types of ADUs: freestanding, attached to the garage, and converted from it. As an invasive species, reed is already subject to ongoing management in NYC. This project repositions it as a resource, utilizing its rapid growth as a building material. Thatched reed with its strong insulating and water resistant properties is used as both the facade and insulation, producing a distinct aesthetic. The proposed unit sizes align with typical neighborhood conditions, with a focus on Rosedale, which is adjacent to reed habitat, as well as JFK Airport and major highways. The acoustic performance of reed becomes especially relevant in this context. The project develops prefabricated reed panels that enable efficient offsite fabrication and rapid onsite assembly, offering an alternative to traditional thatching methods.
