ADU for an Introvert

The ADU is a unique typology. It exists in some forms as a detached structure in the backyard of a Manhattan suburb, doubly removed from the street, a lot within a lot. This presents the opportunity for a closed, insular environment that is still in proximity to the intensity of the urban fabric. This ADU for an introvert utilizes its massing to present as just a 7 foot tall fence when viewed from the street, with its front door, windows, and programming all flipped to face towards a grand white oak on site. This 180 degree rotation allows for this lot within a lot to become the main framework of the project, nurturing this space into a fully fledged garden offering respite from the city. The OSB exterior is covered in a green pine tar, turning the pattern of this particle board into a camouflage blending with the foliage of the massive oak looming above.
