Language as Form: A Zellige Archive

Immigrant Language Archive lives at the crossroads of various immigrant communities in Queens. This house expands on broader meanings of what language preservation means for diasporic peoples. The house affords a free space for anyone learning the language of tile tradition, originating in North Africa but its effects found in various regions of the Global South. Due to the loss of this language comprehension in immigrant communities and originating regions, such language preservation is imperative as the meanings of tiles and stories they tell are critical to the craft itself. Further, while temporary inhabitants learn the language of craft, they can additionally come together to practice their own family’s language as well.
