My project investigates the failure geography of urban illumination in New York City— how, where, and for whom light fails. While artificial light is often celebrated as a symbol of safety and progress, it also reveals patterns of infrastructural neglect and uneven maintenance. By mapping streetlight outage complaints and analyzing their spatial, temporal, and social distributions, this project explores how the city’s lighting network reflects broader dynamics of inequality, governance, and environmental exposure.
