Project by Jessica Smith, Kevin Valido
Connections in the Core is an affordable housing project in the Lower East Side that prioritizes density and access to light, air, and green spaces. Its form can be described as a rough exterior shell that is pulled apart, revealing an exposed core. By creating an internal streetscape, the complex encourages residents to interact with each other on the wide exterior corridors, sky bridges, and external stairs. Each unit’s kitchen and living spaces are oriented along the corridor wall, extending resident activities outward and creating a front stoop-like experience.
Located on the corner of 1st Avenue and E 5th Street, the complex becomes an extension of the existing restaurants and retail on the site. Set partially below double-height pilotis, the corner public plaza seamlessly connects to an underground market hall. The roof of that hall doubles as a private green space, reserved for building residents.
