Project by Andrea Pietro Grioli, Adam Davis
Located at 324 E 5th Street, HOMESHARE HOUSE proposes a shared domestic model that responds to neighborhood-wide demands for senior housing while addressing broader inequities in housing access. Drawing from the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens’ Homesharing Program, the project allows seniors to share their homes with young adults seeking more flexible, temporary housing alternatives. Within each apartment, a balance of permanence and adaptability allows rooms to open or close as residents and living situations evolve. HOMESHARE HOUSE reorients the conventional senior center around central themes of gardens and kitchens as primary means of fostering communal and intergenerational exchange. Communal kitchens form social hubs on every floor, while Winter Gardens, Summer Gardens, and private balconies support year-round food cultivation. A public ground-floor store distributes excess garden produce, extending the project’s ethic of sharing beyond the building and into the neighborhood, through architecture that prioritizes tending, adaptability, reciprocity, and stewardship.
