Project by Avalon Rossi Tipton & Kantanat Sooncharernying
This project proposes a floating tide pool system for Bushwick Inlet that reinterprets the rocky intertidal landscape as a buoyant ecological and social infrastructure. Inspired by coastal tide pools, the floating assembly mimics rocky microtopographies that support algae, kelp, shellfish, and filter-feeding species native to the East River. Constructed from a buoyant core coated in pumice aggregate and cement, and framed by bamboo platforms, the tide pool filters pollutants, provides nursery habitat for fish, and supports avian food webs. Operating at the waterline, the project makes ecological processes visible and accessible, positioning floating habitat as both a remediation strategy and a tool for public engagement, education, and collective stewardship of the urban waterfront.
