Second Life

In response to the escalating waste crisis in the renewable energy sector, the reuse and repurposing of wind turbine blades have emerged as a critical endeavor. With thousands of turbines decommissioned annually, the disposal of non-recyclable composite blades presents a daunting environmental challenge. In the timeframe spanning 2024-2100, our project embarked on a journey, reimagining the fate of these discarded giants. Beginning with a bold statement showcasing the limitations of the blades, our design unfolded across three distinct phases. In Phase 1, we erected a display incorporating full and halved blades as architectural features, beckoning visitors to engage with their imposing presence. Phase 2 delved deeper, disassembling the blades for multifaceted applications, from framing bio-swells to fortifying flood walls, illustrating the versatility latent within their seemingly immutable form. Transitioning into Phase 3, pushing the structural limitations of a whole blade. Our focus shifted towards harnessing the innate characteristics and capabilities of the blades themselves. As we progress, our project evolves into a dynamic hub of community engagement and environmental stewardship. From a vibrant market space to serene parklands adorned with repurposed blade fragments, each phase embodies our commitment to sustainability and innovation.
