33 Thomas Street, 2022

Although keeping the building’s monolithic beauty in mind, action is needed to provide affordable housing and various public programs on this site. The radical cut through the building leaves us with excellent depth for the units and natural light into the shared programs on the upper and the lower podium. Stairs stiffen the building, which provides both dynamic flow and experience. Not only is the staircase works as diagonal bracing, but it also works as an ornament. The ornamentation is the linchpin of structure and circulation, strengthening the connection between spaces, in this case, neighborhoods.
