Muddy Stools

The Muddy Stools is a series of sitting elements that converges digital fabrication with waste materials, fusing earth soils, plant fibres, and animal manure, with additional naturally-derived additives. These elements counter negative interpretations linked to colonialism and industrial power shifts, while offering confrontational perspectives on historical material mix recipes.

The Muddy Stools were commissioned by GSAPP for the 2023-24 AFFIRMATIONS series. The design research, led by Faculty Lola Ben-Alon, with the Natural Materials Lab’s lab assistants Mohammad-Hossein Zowqi, M.Arch ‘25, and Penmai Chongtoua, who installed the work in the Bargehouse venue.
