3D Printed Earth Hackathon

Course Description

Earthen building materials represent an age-old and essential resource for construction. In contemporary times, raw earth materials offer a minimally processed, locally available, non-toxic, and community-accessible alternative to conventional materials like concrete. But what happens when we digitally transform earthen materials to enable more intricate geometries and applications? This week-long intensive hackathon aimed to provide an immersive, hands-on workshop for students to experience various earth-based materials and their digital fabrication through 3D printing. Drawing inspiration from traditional techniques like adobe and exploring speculative geometries across different scales, we aim to envision potential futures for earth mixtures. Alongside the hands-on approach, the Hackathon included theoretical lectures and discussions on material performance, engineering aspects, and the possibilities afforded by additive manufacturing, facilitated through a panel discussion featuring esteemed guest speakers.
