GSAPP PHD LANGUAGE STUDY SUPPORT

The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) is pleased to provide professional development funds dedicated for GSAPP PhD students. GSAPP will pay for up to two language courses taken by PhD students during the summer at Columbia if taken as preparation for the required language examinations or if needed due to the country/region of their specialization.

Alternatively, the GSAPP PhD Language Study Support will provide stipends of $1,000 to PhD students who wish to study a language through a non-Columbia affiliated program in lieu of GSAPP paying for the student’s language course taken during the summer at Columbia. The language study must be in preparation for the required language examinations or needed due to the country/region of their specialization.

There is a limit of two awards during a student’s career at Columbia, and each stipend will be provided in lieu of GSAPP paying for the student’s language course taken during the summer at Columbia. The award is not guaranteed, and requests are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. If applications exceed available funds, students who have not received an award in previous years will have priority.

AWARD

  • GSAPP will support three funding cycles: Summer (for study in June through August), Fall (for study in September through December), and Spring (for study in January through May).

  • Awards will only be granted for future language study. Awards are not intended to reimburse students for past study.

  • Applicants may request funds for a singular program and period of study. Proposals may not include multiple activities in one request.

  • The number of stipends and the eligibility requirements may be adjusted periodically based on the availability of funding.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be enrolled GSAPP PhD students in their funding-eligible years (years one through seven since their date of first registration in GSAPP).

  • Applicants must be in good standing, having maintained satisfactory academic progress.

  • The student must be studying a language as preparation for the required language examinations or if needed due to the country/region of their specialization.

  • Those not eligible to apply are administrative and staff members, emeritus faculty, visiting faculty, scholars in residence, adjunct faculty or researchers, and full-time faculty or researchers.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must submit the following documents to the PhD Office (Attn: Greydon Piper)

  • Brief Funding Request (no more than one page)

    • For what language program of study will you utilize these funds?
    • For what period of time will you engage in the program of study?
    • In what ways will this funding advance your scholarship?
    • Please specify anticipated outcomes and impact.
    • Specify if the language study is in fulfillment of a language proficiency requirement, and if so, state the planned method of assessment to fulfill this requirement.
  • Written approval from Program Director verifying that the language is in preparation for the required language examinations or if needed due to the country/region of their specialization. If the language study is in fulfillment of a language proficiency requirement, confirm that the planned method of assessment satisfies the proficiency requirement.

Application Deadlines:

  • Fall study: July 15

  • Spring study: October 31

  • Summer study: March 31

PAYMENT

Recipients of the award will receive a non-tuition financial aid award. Payment is subject to applicable taxation and withholdings.
