Columbia GSAPP proudly announces the creation of a new scholarship fund in honor of Lance Hosey ’87CC (1964-2021) acclaimed architect, author, advocate and public speaker. Led by a founding gift from his brother, Terry Hosey, the Lance Hosey Scholarship Fund to Make Things Better is to be awarded in perpetuity to a GSAPP student whose studies and work demonstrate a commitment to the intersection of design and sustainability, the cornerstone of Hosey’s professional work.

“I believe that designers have an obligation to create things that are both beautiful and sustainable, but I also believe that we need to stop thinking about those terms as somehow separate.”

Hosey earned a degree in Architecture from Columbia College before completing a Masters degree at Yale University. For nearly a decade he was a Director with William McDonough + Partners and later served as Chief Sustainability Officer with two of the world’s largest design firms. Most recently he was HMC Architects’ Chief Impact Officer and Civic Practice Leader. The recipient of numerous professional awards and fellowships, Lance became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2014. The next year, he was named a LEED Fellow by the US Green Building Council, one of only 30 people in the world to receive both honors. Hosey authored hundreds of articles and several books including The Shape of Green: Aesthetics, Ecology and Design (2012), which studied the relationships between beauty and sustainability.

His love of people and his dedication to raising up the next generation, especially women, made him an amazing mentor to many: inspirational, supportive, insightful and genuine. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Kate Higgins Hosey; his brothers Kevin (wife Terrelia) and Terry Hosey (wife Tiffanny); nephews Christian and Sean Hosey; nieces Kimberly and Morgan Hosey; and an enormous collection of close friends, colleagues and admirers.

The Lance Hosey Scholarship Fund to Make Things Better is an endowed scholarship and will be awarded annually with the first recipient anticipated for Fall 2024. The scholarship will be in the amount of $5,000 in its first year and increase in future years with additional support of the endowment. The application form and requirements will be communicated to eligible students.

We invite alumni and friends to join us in supporting students who reflect the values of Hosey’s work by contributing to the endowment (please select from dropdown menu). All gifts made by December 31, 2023 to the Lance Hosey Scholarship Fund to Make Things Better will be matched 1:1 by Columbia GSAPP. Please contact Leah Cohen at lc2685@columbia.edu for additional information.
