Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program

The Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program seeks to expand innovation within the field of architecture and the built environment by creating opportunities to introduce diverse voices to the profession.

The Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program offers full tuition scholarships for GSAPP’s Intro to Architecture summer program students. Named in honor of the School’s first Black graduate and former chair of the architecture department at Howard University, the Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program is intended to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity by introducing career paths in architecture and its related fields. Many Intro to Architecture students later pursue graduate degrees at GSAPP, and the Robinson Scholars Program supports the recruitment of historically underrepresented individuals to the School and the disciplines of the built environment at large.

The Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program is generously supported through an endowed fund established by the IDC Foundation with matching funds from GSAPP. The Scholars who are funded through that endowment are known as IDC Foundation Hilyard Robinson Scholars.

“The IDC Foundation is pleased to have been able to inaugurate and endow the Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program,” said Raymond R. Savino, President of the Board of Directors of the IDC Foundation. “This is a vital reflection of the Foundation’s commitment to innovation in architecture and the built environment and to enhancing interactions that foster new perspectives, insights, and practices.”

The first cohort of students hailed from institutions including Howard University, Morgan State University and Morehouse College. In addition to attending GSAPP’s Introduction to Architecture Program, Robinson Scholars were appointed as Project Associates affiliated with the GSAPP Housing Lab and worked alongside the graduate students on a case study for West Harlem Group Assistance.
