Pipe Politics, Contested Waters: Embedded Infrastructures of Millennial Mumbai

Fri, Jan 8, 2016    6:30pm

This is a crucial moment for Mumbai’s water infrastructure – the revision of Mumbai’s Development Plan and the rethinking of the policies governing water supply to residents of Mumbai “slums” – are being rigorously reviewed and revised. In order to encourage an informed dialogue on the city’s water problems, Studio-X will host a panel discussion on Mumbai’s water troubles, with Dr. Lisa Björkman’s timely new book, Pipe Politics, Contested Waters: Embedded Infrastructures of Millennial Mumbai (Orient Blackswan 2015; Duke University Press 2015) as the catalyst. A presentation by Dr. Lisa Björkman will be followed by reactions and responses from a panel of both local and international practitioners and academics:

Panelists & Discussants:
- Mr. Arun Kadam, Executive engineer, Water Department
- Mr. Rajiv Jalota, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), BMC
- Mr. Sitaram Shelar, Program Director, YUVA (Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action)
- Dr. Michael Leaf, School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) University of British Columbia
- Mr. Rohan Shivkumar, Deputy Director, KRVIA
- Dr. Jonathan Anjaria, Department of Anthropology, Brandeis University
- Ms. Lubaina Rangwala, Architect, City and Regional Planner
- Mr. Rajeev Thakker, Architect, Artist, Curator Studio X Mumbai

We will conclude the evening with an open discussion, followed by a reception. This event is free & open to the public
