Chandigarh: Modernism and Modernization

Kumar will discuss the tensions between Chandigarh’s status as a historically significant urban and architectural project and the pressures of regional growth it now faces. Three buildings of Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex have been declared World Heritage Sites but development pressures in the “Tri City” region – Chandigarh and the adjacent cities of Panchkula and Mohali – present new challenges. Professionals and advocates in preservation, landscape, regional systems, development and architectural design are engaged in difficult debates and must make hard choices. The lecture will address recent initiatives and offer case studies in Chandigarh and the region.
